Animated Interviews of My Friends’ Addictions

Harvard students are a cocktail of obsession, impulsiveness, and bad, bad habits. I should know.

I wanted to convey this addictive trait in an animation, so I interviewed my friends about their addictions and tried to take as impartial a stance as I could, avoiding both the stigma and the glorification that can come with discussions of drug use. Instead, I just asked interviewees, “What does your high feel like?”

Don’t Worry, I’m Not a Snitch

Because of the sensitive topic, I kept interviews anonymous. But I was initially stuck as to how to present these interviews… Should I draw the characters realistically? Should I animate the characters doing the drugs they were describing? Should I even turn this project in (goes to show what kind of student I was)?

Eventually, I settled on a mock-interview format, and I decided that there was no reason not to make the animated characters absolutely insane and absurd. So I did. This allowed me to give humor to the heavy interviews and to let the content of the animation breathe.
